How to Do a Real-World E-Bike Range Test

The number on the box is a best case. Here's how to find the number that actually matters — what your bike does on your commute.

Every e-bike listing has a range figure, and that figure is almost always measured under close-to-ideal conditions: a lighter test rider, flat terrain, mild weather, and often the lowest assist level. Real range depends heavily on rider weight, hills, wind, temperature, and how much assist you actually use — which is why the only range number worth trusting is one you measure yourself.

Why the Manufacturer Number Rarely Matches Real Use

Range testing standards vary by manufacturer, and even standardized tests (like the EN 15194 method some brands cite) use specific assumptions about rider weight, terrain, and assist level that may not match your actual commute. Cold weather alone can cut lithium-ion battery range by 20% or more compared to mild conditions, and hills or a heavier rider increase motor draw well beyond what a flat-terrain test captures.

None of this means the listed number is dishonest — it's a standardized best case, useful for comparing bikes to each other, just not a reliable prediction of what you'll get on your specific route.

How to Actually Test It

Start with a full charge and ride your actual commute (or a route representative of your typical riding) at the assist level you'd normally use — not the lowest setting just to maximize the number. Note the battery percentage at the start and after a known distance, ideally checking in after each leg of a regular round trip rather than waiting until the battery is nearly dead.

Repeat this over a few different days with different conditions — a cold morning, a warmer afternoon, a windier day — since a single test only tells you about that specific day's conditions. After three or four rides you'll have a realistic range window (say, "35 to 45 miles on my commute at assist level 2") rather than a single misleading number.

Building In a Safety Margin

Once you know your real range, plan around roughly 70-80% of it as your reliable distance, not the full number — battery capacity degrades gradually with age, and a colder day or a stronger headwind than usual can eat into range faster than expected. If your commute is a round trip near your tested range limit, that margin is the difference between comfortably making it home and finishing on pure pedal power with a dead motor.
