Single e-bike with ramp: Young Electric 1-Bike Hitch Rack with RampBuying Guide
Best Bike Racks & Storage
Two different problems, one guide: getting your bike to a ride, and keeping it out of the way (and safe) at home.
Bike racks and bike storage solve two different problems that tend to get bundled into one shopping trip: how do you transport your bike by car, and where does it live when you’re not riding it. We cover both, since commuters usually need at least one.

Car Racks: Hitch vs. Trunk vs. Roof
Hitch racks are the best all-around choice if your vehicle has a hitch receiver — they load at bumper height (no lifting a bike overhead), carry more weight, and don’t contact the vehicle’s paint. They’re also the most expensive option and require a hitch installed if your vehicle doesn’t already have one.
Trunk racks (strap-mounted) are the cheapest and most portable option, working on most sedans and hatchbacks without permanent hardware. The tradeoff is more setup fuss, less weight capacity, and a small risk of paint contact if straps aren’t positioned carefully.
Roof racks keep the rear of the vehicle clear (useful if you also need trunk or hatch access) and work well for multiple bikes, but require lifting each bike overhead and add wind noise and a fuel economy penalty on longer drives.
E-Bikes Need Rack Capacity Checked
E-bikes commonly weigh 50–70 lbs — well beyond what many standard bike racks are rated to carry, especially trunk racks designed around lighter standard bikes. If you’re transporting an e-bike, confirm the rack’s per-bike weight rating explicitly; a hitch rack rated for heavy-duty or e-bike use is usually the safer choice.
How We Keep This Guide Useful
We start with the riding problem, then weigh specs that change the real ownership experience: fit, capacity, range, braking, storage, serviceability, and price. Product cards only appear when the product is live and reviewed for the site, and this guide was last checked on 2026-07-11.
FAQ
What’s the best type of bike rack for a car?
A hitch rack is the best all-around choice if your vehicle has (or can add) a hitch receiver — easiest loading, highest weight capacity. Trunk racks are the budget-friendly alternative for vehicles without a hitch.
Can a regular bike rack carry an e-bike?
Not always — check the rack’s per-bike weight rating. E-bikes often weigh 50–70 lbs, which exceeds many standard trunk and some hitch racks. Look for a rack explicitly rated for e-bikes or heavy-duty use.
How should I store a bike in a small apartment?
A wall-mounted hook or vertical stand is the most space-efficient option for apartments — it keeps the bike off the floor without needing a garage or dedicated storage room.
